How does a laser work in dentistry?

The laser produces a highly precise beam of concentrated laser energy that treats a wide range of oral health problems. The laser simultaneously sterilizes and coagulates blood vessels, thus reducing the chance of infection. Lasers are also used in dentistry for surgical procedures, e.g. as a cutting instrument, tissue vaporizer. This means that it melts the tissue with which it comes into contact.

Laser root canal treatment

Using the latest laser technology (Fotona’s SSP and SWEEPS), the root canal treatment is minimally invasive and significantly faster (up to 10 times faster). Most importantly, laser cleaning and disinfection of anatomically complex root canal systems is significantly more effective and predictable.

Rinsing the root canal system with solutions where the Er:YAG laser produces non-thermal, photoacoustic waves, especially in the form of short pulses (pulse waves) (photon-induced photoacoustic streaming), effectively cleans not only the root canal system, but also other infected tooth tissues.

The modification of the Er:YAG laser with the latest Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photo-acoustic Streaming technology (SWEEPS®) further improves the effectiveness of root canal rinsing and disinfection.
The use of synchronized, ultra-short waves (pulses) results in accelerated collapse of laser-induced bubbles, leading to enhanced shock wave emission even in the narrowest root canals.

During periodontal (gum) surgery, the laser directs a small amount of energy – about three hairs thick – between the gum and the tooth. The laser removes the diseased tissue, preventing infection. All this is done without making any kind of incisions.

Unlike traditional gum surgery, where bleeding is a normal process, laser gum surgery results in little or no bleeding. An additional benefit of the laser is the ability to seal the nerve endings. The whole process causes only minor discomfort, making local anesthesia and possibly even sedation unnecessary.

The simplicity of laser gum surgery means a quicker recovery. Traditional oral surgery requires a recovery time of 2 to 4 weeks. With the LPT procedure, many people return to work within a day.

Reduction of hyperplastic tissue – patients who wear dental braces or take certain medications tend to have increased gum tissue.

Where laser cannot help?

For the time being, there are certain procedures for which the laser technology cannot be used. Lasers cannot properly remove silver-colored dental fillings or fill the gaps between teeth. For such procedures, we use classical dental technologies.

Laser treatments are mostly comfortable for patients, causing no pain, heat or discomfort. Only in rare cases may anesthesia be necessary. This need is determined by the doctor during the consultation or procedure.
