Pediatric dentistry

With the advent of laser technology in the dentist’s office, you can forget about the discomfort, painful injections and unpleasant sound of the drill.

The possibilities of using lasers in pediatric dentistry are wide. We use it for preventive manipulations, preparing teeth for fillings and for complex surgical manipulations.

Use of sealants in children at increased risk of dental caries

Sealants are dental materials used to prevent tooth decay. In the anatomical parts of the teeth that are difficult to clean, ecological niches favorable to micro-organisms are created, which contribute to the development of dental caries. Closing these gaps with sealants prevents or reduces the likelihood of cavities forming.

The first permanent molars usually hatch after 6 years of age. By sealing the incompletely mineralized tooth surfaces, they are protected from future carious cavities. Subsequently, second molars erupt during the rapid growth spurt of adolescence. These molars are just as vulnerable as the first molars, and a typical adolescent exposes them to excessive amounts of sugar. The sooner these chewing surfaces can be sealed, the better.
Although dental sealants are usually used early in life, adults who are at high risk of tooth decay can reduce their risk by undergoing this procedure.

The use of a laser in the sealant application procedure prevents both the coating of the infected part of the tooth by disinfecting it and improves the long-term adhesion of the tooth hard tissue to the sealant.

Treatment of dental caries in children

The treatment methods for dental caries are chosen by the dentist, assessing both the child’s individual caries risk factors and previous treatment experience.

The classical method of caries treatment involves removing the infected tooth tissue with rotating instruments (drills) and closing the cavity with an appropriate filling material. These manipulations often require local anesthesia or, in severe cases, sedation of the child in an appropriate clinic setting.

The use of lasers in caries treatment replaces the use of rotary instruments (drills). Under optimal treatment conditions, local anesthetic injection is not necessary. The laser removes only the infected tooth tissue, leaving the healthy tooth tissue intact. As a rule, the tooth treatment process is much faster, the discomfort and possible complications of anesthesia in the oral mucosa and the post-treatment sensitivity of the tooth are avoided.

In cases of minor and moderate damage, the form and function of the deciduous tooth is restored using materials appropriate to the clinical situation (including different colors).

Laser treatment of the hard tissues of the tooth – enamel and dentin – significantly improves their adhesion to the filling material, which is very important to prevent re-infection and caries complications.

Treatment of caries complications

As the infection spreads, a decision often has to be made to remove part of the infected pulp, or pulpotomy.
The classic pulpotomy method involves surgically removing part of the pulp and inserting medication (to stop bleeding, reduce inflammation) into the tooth.

The laser treats the pulp tissue of the deciduous tooth without mechanically damaging it. By eliminating inflammation and bleeding, the tooth can be restored in one visit.

After partial or complete pulp extraction, the use of deciduous dental crowns is recommended to restore the tooth.

For the functional restoration of the lateral teeth, prefabricated metal crowns for deciduous teeth are used, which are designed to last until the independent tooth erupts. The metal crowns have the anatomical shape of a deciduous tooth.

For the aesthetic restoration of the incisors, prefabricated zirconia crowns for the deciduous teeth are used.

A laser is also used to prepare teeth for crowns.

Not just technology, but attitudes

Innovative laser technologies help us provide child-friendly dentistry. However, communication is the most important thing, which is why treatment procedures for young patients in our clinic are provided by doctors who specialize in working with children. We will make sure that the visit of young patients to our clinic is as comfortable and fruitful as possible!
