The first laser dental clinic in the Baltic States unveiled

On 7 October 2020, the innovative laser dentistry clinic Era Esthetic Dental was officially unveiled at Jeruzalemes iela 2/4, Riga.

For the first time in the Baltics, a new generation of laser technology for treating oral diseases has become available – now patients can not only painlessly (and therefore anesthesia-free) treat various dental diseases, including periodontitis, but also enjoy the benefits of gentle teeth whitening, up to 6 shades in just one go. It is also important that laser dentistry is safer during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, as it avoids the use of rotating instruments, which are considered a major risk factor for the transmission of respiratory tract infections.
The combination of Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers, which combine different wavelengths, can literally be called a new era in dentistry in the Baltics in general and in Latvia in particular.

Patients can now be treated painlessly, with only minor discomfort, and no local anesthesia is required. ‘This applies not only to conventional cavities but also to the treatment of serious and painful conditions involving inflammation that can lead to tooth loss,’ says Dr. Ieva Henkuzena, Chief Physician at Era Esthetic Dental.

Classical methods for severe periodontitis require surgical intervention. As a result, a long recovery period is needed – from 2 to 8 weeks of sick leave. “However, the latest type of laser avoids this,” explains the head doctor. “Its use in the treatment of oral diseases, including periodontitis, has completely changed the traditional approach, significantly reducing the patient’s pain and discomfort in the post-operative period, as well as reducing the risk of re-infection.”

The most advanced lasers in dentistry are designed to address specific clinical challenges in the treatment of periodontitis. For years, the so-called lever technique has been used to combat this common disease. Now, thanks to advancements in technology, the laser lever procedure is being utilized: after treating the inflamed, infected tissue and eliminating the cause of the inflammation, the laser simultaneously “closes the tissue”. Open wounds, which traditionally had to be closed with stitches to heal successfully, are no longer created. In the absence of incisions made with conventional instruments that separate the gum tissue from the jaw, this procedure can be considered minimally invasive.

This technology is particularly suitable for patients with medical risks as it is safe and does not cause local or systemic side effects, e.g., in diabetic patients, as the laser itself is bactericidal and causes minimal bleeding. It is also recommended for patients with kidney failure as it is bactericidal and painless, eliminating the need for post-operative medication. Additionally, it is ideal for children, the elderly, and those suffering from systemic diseases such as diabetes or hypertension, as well as for patients who wish to avoid injections and stitches.

Studies have shown that laser therapy has shown lasting positive effects in the treatment of periodontitis, dental caries and many other diseases.

The laser has also proven its worth in cosmetic dentistry, gently whitening teeth up to 6 shades in just one hour: “This whitening method is ideal for those who have long wanted to smile Hollywood style” but were afraid of damaging the enamel. To sum up, I have to say that the new generation laser used at Era Esthetic Dental is a truly revolutionary innovation in dentistry, as it allows treatments and aesthetic procedures to be carried out painlessly, much less invasively and much faster than traditional methods, with the results lasting for longer. In addition, a very important aspect is that the laser allows the use of non-rotating devices, which means that the risk of infection with respiratory diseases, including the coronavirus Covid-19, is significantly reduced,” adds the clinic’s head doctor.
